Description

Teresa Wells MRSS

Teresa Wells was inspired by a moral upbringing, and the tenuous existence of man, I possess an ethical consciousness along with a fascination for man’s ability to survive. Through the medium of sculpture I explore the fragile relationship between man and his society.  Isolation, miscommunication, frailty and strength are most attractive. Influenced by the ethnography’s of participant anthropologists, in particular Mary Douglas, Nigel Barley and Evelyn Hatcher, I obtained a first class honors degree in fine art from Nottingham Trent University, 1996, and undertook postgraduate studies at Loughborough University, where my tutors included John Atkin FRBS and Dan Archer FRBS. After working on large scale installations / sculptures up to 4 meters in length and at the more intimate scale, 50 cm cubed in mixed media, I now focus on creating emotive figurative sculptures in bronze, that celebrate man’s physical and emotional survival over adversity. I employ an illustrative style that pertains to theatrical gesturing, with particular attention made in re-creating detail to the face, hands and feet. The strong athletic body shapes of dancers and athletes inspire me.  When combined with geometric architectural supports, in steel, bronze and stone, I aim to show a contemporary approach in our understanding of bronze sculpture, lifting it off the plinth and making it appear less monumental and traditional. Recently awarded 4th place in an international art competition for ‘Narcissus’ and best in show by Richard Deacon CBE at Creekside, London in 2015. I have received numerous awards and exhibited both nationally and internationally.   More recently I attended an 18-month bronze-casting residency in Shropshire where I actively participated in the making of a life size bronze sculpture and a 10ft bronze entitled ‘Lions of The Great War Monument’.
